I've played Leo at Kannagara since May 17th, 2011 (week 23 day 2 in game) so a little over 8 months real time 12 weeks in-game as of his latest dream. And until I wrote his latest dream, I didn't really realize how long it's been or how much has happened and changed for him. So in honor of all that time, I'd like to sit here and write a little bit about him throughout his days in Kannagara.

When I first apped Leo, I brought him in from the end of chapter 47 of the manga. And noteably, shortly after I apped him was when Mochizuki Jun began to start filling in the blanks (and effectively jossing a lot of the things we thought we knew about the series.) Luckily I felt like I had dodged a bit of that, and I got answers shortly before and after apping so I wasn't entirely in the dark, and in fact, I was given some new details at a convenient time.

Chapter fourty seven "Unbirthday" takes place after Elliot and Leo arrive at the home of the Vessalius family. The Headhunter case is underway and Elliot is still fired up about getting answers and solving the case, but the overall atmosphere is still light, compared to what it is in current canon. I chose this for the sake of playing a Leo who was still completely and utterly devoted to Elliot and still had his guilt trapped down inside but could still smile. He came into Kannagara from a point in canon where he really did have a lot of warm feelings lingering. It had been a warm, cheerful atmosphere. And for the most part, he had been happy because Elliot was. This was obviously before a lot of the events that slowly ate away at him and any things that did remained something he kept entirely internal, to himself for Elliot's sake.

So that is the last impression he had before arriving in Kannagara. That's why he was able to keep his cool for the most part when he arrived in a strange world without Elliot anywhere in sight. The fact that Elliot responded quickly helped absolve him of any panic he had been feeling.

The world itself wasn't something unpleasant. His first thoughts of it were that it was clearly under-developed and that the lack of certain luxuries could prove difficult. However, for his own sake and purpose, he thought Kannagara was a fine place. It was quiet and peaceful and while it lacked some things, it had the things he considered necessary. In fact for him, there was still more than he needed. But even after he spent some time in the world, he never really intended to expand his view of it. The center of his world was, in Kannagara as it had been at home, Elliot, and as long as he had Elliot it didn't matter what else was going on out there. For the longest time Mizusato and the Himorogi was the extent of his grasp upon the world itself.

But he noticed one thing about the world itself that he liked, and that was the fact that here, the influence of the Abyss did not exist beyond the existence of certain chains within it. As such, he was no longer hounded by the strange sights he saw and feared constantly in his own world. For some time he contemplated and teetered back and forth on the decision before allowing Elliot to cut his bangs and expose his eyes. For him, that was a large step towards facing the world at large. Things that he could get away without before, he couldn't any longer, such as avoiding the direct gaze of others. And it became much harder to look away. Even if it wasn't his own world, even if it wasn't the same, the fear was the same, and the act of doing something to overcome it was a dramatic change for him.

That marked the beginning of Leo's stage of healthy development. Things that were easy to avoid before, he was forced to face, and he took a stronger position on issues than before. He became a little bit stronger in small ways over time.

He developed relationships with people in canon that he didn't really have back home, and there were others he had that changed or were expanded upon because of his time there. Alice, he formed a sort of camaraderie with, feeling they shared a similar fear, and also a sense of gratitude for all the time she had spent with Elliot and what she had done for him when he wasn't there. But he also came to fear her, and those different feelings warred with each other for some time. Vincent, he was very wary of at first. He made him uncomfortable. But by prying into something rather personal, he found that he was assured by Vincent's strong feelings for Elliot, and no longer felt uncomfortable but rather, began to trust him. Break is someone he came to fear and dislike. For all the stress that Break had put Elliot through with his accusations, Leo couldn't forgive him. But he also feared the damage that Break could do and felt panicked to try and stop any further attempts, less any further damage be done, even if it was at his own expense.

And even his relationship with Elliot changed. Vincent made him question his strong feelings for his master and best friend. But once he started to question it, he couldn't stop. His curiosity was great.

This (with a little help from Vincent and the inhabitants of Kannagara) is how Leo began considering his feelings for Elliot on a whole new level, to the point where he believes that yes, he does love Elliot. He's not used to feelings like this, and is still, in a lot of ways, unsure about how relationships work.
